It was the first day of the month, my country’s birthday, death day, Nigeria’s Independence day. I have been told to write something interesting about Nigeria, but all I found myself doing was scrambling and rolling papers, playing pen games with the excuse “I am thinking of what to write “, but really, is there anything to write? From the yelling of bus attendants trying to get the attention of angry passengers discussing the country’s national cakes and those who never let fellow citizens have a good part, to the book of the pupil still in chapter 1 when exams are the week after, “My teacher is not around” he says trying to console himself.
The screaming and fighting of bank customers to the head manager for attending to the last in line because she’s Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa or Efik. Nigeria is a country of many problems and wonders that seem to never end but not once or twice but a thousand times have I heard or seen my brothers say NAIJA NO DEY CARRY LAST.
Being a Nigerian, I along with the rest of the country have faced embarrassing and disappointing situations in the country but that hasn’t stopped us from trying and trying and trying, so tell me, what is there not to write?
In the midst of our confusion yet focus and to the ones who work for a better Nigeria, HAPPY INDEPENDENCE MONTH.
