England star, Dele Alli, made the difference for Tottenham Hotspur as they kicked off their Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Newcastle United.
Spurs were the first to score from a header by Jan Vertonghen in the 8th minute.
The hosts rallied back and equalised about 4 minutes after, when Joselu headed in Matt Ritchie’s superb cross after being left unmarked six yards from goal.
Alli crowned the game up with an 18th-minute goal, heading Serge Aurier’s cross past goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Spurs held on to the lead and ensured they started their campaign with victory.
“I think it was important to start with three points,” Alli said after the match.
“It’s a long season and we have got to improve but it was a positive start. Last season I scored against Newcastle away and I want to keep improving as a player and as a squad.”
It was the second season in a row that Tottenham had won their opening fixture at Newcastle.
